Online hate speech, particularly gender-based and Arabic-language content, has real-world impacts on communities in Jordan. Recognizing this challenge, local innovators, researchers, and civil society groups have developed AI tools that detect, analyze, and prevent harmful online content.
One standout initiative is Nuha, an open-source AI tool developed by the Jordan Open Source Association (JOSA). Nuha is designed to detect gender-based hate speech targeting women in Arabic digital spaces. It uses local datasets, including Jordanian hashtags and the names of women activists, allowing it to understand dialectal nuances that global models often miss.
Team behind Nuha:
These individuals, along with a wider community of contributors, have developed and maintained Nuha, combining technical expertise with cultural and linguistic understanding.
Nuha’s development is informed by academic research and civil society reporting. Datasets and reports on online hate speech in Jordan provide critical insights for training AI models. This collaboration between research, technology, and community engagement ensures that AI tools are locally relevant and ethically sound.
