As part of our recent youth activities, we hosted a learning session focused on the role of Generative AI in today’s digital landscape. This session was integrated within our broader work on promoting safe online behavior and preventing hate speech among young people.

However, this workshop was not a one-way lesson — it was a dialogue.
We invited young participants to openly share their experiences, challenges, and concerns regarding online communication. Many of them spoke about how hate speech and negative comments can affect confidence, relationships, and mental well-being. By giving space for their voices, we highlighted that understanding these experiences is the first step to building safer digital environments.
Participants also engaged in team-based activities, where they worked together to identify the sources of online hate speech and discuss practical strategies for responding to harmful digital interactions. Through collaboration, they reflected on how empathy, critical thinking, and responsible communication can change how we interact online.

Once we established this foundation, we introduced Generative AI — not as a tool to replace human creativity, but as a tool that can support positive communication. We explored how AI can help young people learn, create, and express themselves, while also emphasizing the importance of ethical use and awareness of misinformation.

To support ongoing learning beyond the workshop, JYIF has developed a short educational video about Generative AI, showing young people how they can use AI for good — whether in education, storytelling, advocacy, or community engagement.
This experience reminded us that when youth are empowered with knowledge, dialogue, and collaboration, they do not just adapt to the future — they shape it.
